The Atlanta Salsa Congress is a collaboration between Piel Canela New York and its first out of state division Piel Canela Atlanta. Piel Canela Dance Company Atlanta opened in January of 2004 under the direction of Sheila Sampath. Ms. Sampath trained and continues to train under Mr. Joseph Burgos, Founder and Director of Piel Canela New York. The Atlanta school operates with the same syllabus, focus and energy as the New York school has become well-noted for thus providing New York based training in Atlanta. The Atlanta school also started a dance company which will begin performing in late Summer 2004 for local as well as out of state Congressos and events. First, welcome to the site of the Atlanta Salsa Congress!! I am so proud of this venture and look forward to meeting all of you personally next Fall in Atlanta. We will have an event that will entertain, educate and most of all be memorable to you. The Southern Hospitality extends beautifully with the warmth and friendliness you will find in our Salsa Community.
The grand opening of Piel Canela Dance School in Atlanta was an amazing dream: NY training now available in Atlanta. Extensive training took place so that the Atlanta School would offer the same training/syllabus as the school in New York. We have had either Joe and his partner Cynthia Araujo in Atlanta twice a month to ensure that the standards are being met in addition to monthly visits by me to PCD New York for continued training. It has and continues to be an intense effort with benefits well worth the results we see in Atlanta. For me it has been such a great sense of satisfaction to see and hear the joy of our students/friends watch this venture expand into a positive family of dancers. Salsa is a social dance and as such we believe that we should not only come together to dance, but enjoy friendship and conversation: a "family" of dancers.
The Atlanta Salsa Congress has been a desire of many Salseros and Instructors
here in Atlanta--so often we have heard "..they have Salsa in
Atlanta?"...when we travel in the U.S. or abroad. Atlanta has a great
representation of Salsa: on1, LA on1, on2, Casino, "Puerto Rican" Style,
"cuban" and more!...as well as beautiful native dancers for example from Columbia, Venezuela, Puerto
Rico, Cuba, Mexico.
It is not surprising to note the variety of Salsa because Atlanta is known
for being a melting pot for people as well as business. Our hopes are that the
Salsa Congress will show how Atlanta is truly a jewel of the South--with
the ability to offer and satisfy any lover of Salsa!....but to open up many to the beauty of this city especially the warmth of the people.
When we opened Piel Canela in January, we said why stop the dream there....and that is how this first Congress was born. Truly it is a dream come true that we are sure will put Atlanta on the Salsa map!
